From former laboratory to home, with the aim of preserving the characteristic lab atmosphere while optimising living quality. An intervention based on the principle of a ‘home within a home’ – a new continuous contour within the existing walls of the building: a ‘home in a former lab’. By opting for a glass, transparent contour, the original lab atmosphere is preserved, while creating a dynamic relationship between the interior and exterior. In some areas, the contour serves as the new facade of the compact home, while in others, it serves as a free wall, a separation between inside and outside, or even as a display window. Together with the original walls, the contour fully organises the space: a logical, zoned layout with an entrance, office, unheated summer kitchen, and ‘all-season’ kitchen, dining room, a sitting area between two patios, and a central sleeping nook and bathroom. In short: a single family home in an old laboratory.
